Reductive, 2012-present

These scenes of blank facades and nondescript locations resist and critique the culture of consumerism and spectacle. I use a minimalist approach that attempts to avoid overt personal or political commentary, instead letting the scenes speak for themselves. I pay attention to the formal and traditional elements of photography, such as unity, composition, and clarity, but I work to avoid overly aestheticizing these locations. By restricting easy identifiers and eschewing popular locations, each scene is unique and self-contained, existing only as a photograph on paper. I am inspired by the legacy of New Topographics, a movement that challenged the conventional notions of landscape photography in the 1970s. Through my work, I hope to focus on the ambiguity and contradiction of these ordinary and overlooked landscapes and invite viewers to question their own perceptions and assumptions about landscape photography.
